Nehru Institute Of Mountaineering

The proposal to have a mountaineering Institute at Uttarkashi was mooted by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India and thy because of its close proximity to the Gangotri region in western garhwal, which undoubtedly has the best climbing and training potential in India and perhaps in the world. The institute was raised in the year 1965 and was established in Gyansu. Later in 1966 Ladari reservee Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1964. Uttarkashi was specially selected as the home of NIM, primarild forest area was chosen for the institute. In a historic development in November 2001, with the newly formed State of Uttaranchal coming into existence, the Chief Minister of Uttaranchal (now Uttarakhand) became the Vice President of the Institute.
